7 Tips to Breathe Easier & Fight Spring Allergies

As the spring season approaches, allergies will be on the rise. For some, the change of seasons only causes a few sneezes here and there. For others, the effects can be very problematic and restrict their ability to breathe. Take the precautionary steps listed in this article to fight these symptoms and ensure you can live actively as the weather warms up.

What Allergies Cause

Allergies can cause a myriad of issues – all differing in severity. Besides the common shortness of breath, allergies may cause you to experience:

  • Vomiting
  • Hives or rash
  • Coughing, sneezing, or runny nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Tightness in the throat
  • Trouble swallowing or swelling of your tongue

There are several things that can trigger allergies. Some of the most common are:

While hanging your laundry outside can save money and add a level of freshness to your clothing, it also acts as a pollen magnet. During the allergy season – especially during high pollen times – do not hang your clothing outside on clothing lines. Use the dryer instead.

2. Stay Inside on High Pollen Days

You, too, should stay inside – at least during high pollen times! The amount of pollen in the air varies from day to day but on average days, pollen rises during the morning, peaks midday, then gradually falls. Try to avoid the high-pollen times as best you can!

3. Shampoo and Shower Every Night

While being outside, your skin and hair will gather different pollens. To avoid having the pollens spread throughout your bedroom and other living spaces, be sure to shower thoroughly every night.

4. Use Allergy Treatment as a Preventative

Be proactive rather than reactive by taking allergy medication prior to experiencing any symptoms. However, be sure to consult with your doctor before doing so.

5. Clean Air Filters

At home, at the office, or when driving, keep the windows closed and the air conditioning on to avoid the circulation of pollen. However, this greatly heightens the importance of regularly cleaning and replacing your air filters.

6. Introduce Plants to Your House and/or Office
